Abstract
The article examines how the performative approach of cultural anthropology can help rethink music mediation, particularly popular music, in schools, museums, and other extracurricular contexts. Although popular music is considered closely related to everyday life it requires reflection and contextualization. Ethnographic methods promote experience-based and research-oriented learning that centres on the tension between proximity and distance. ‘Imaginary ethnography’ also offers an approach in which distance from the object of study is methodically applied, and the conscious invention of musical cultures and their objects can actively trigger creative and self-reflective learning processes. The text also proposes practical approaches for music mediation, based on various examples of artistic practices.
